Saint Etienne-du-Mont

May 10th, 2018

The concentration of stunningly beautiful churches in our neighborhood must be among the highest in the world.  I have written and posted photos before of the world-famous Notre Dame, as well as Saint Germain-des-Prés and Saint Sulpice, all within 10-12 minutes' walk of our apartment.  Perhaps I also mentioned Saint Severin with its neo-gothic architecture and its contemporary stained glass windows.  It is near Notre Dame but a bit closer to us.

On Sunday, I visited Saint Etienne-du-Mont, just behind the Panthéon, for the first time.  I had walked by on many occasions and knew it as a church whose facade and front stairs were featured in "Midnight in Paris."  It is in the heart of the Quartier Latin, again about 10 minutes' walk from our apartment.  We were with our visiting nephews and decided to stop in and look around.  I found it to be, perhaps, the most beautiful of all.  The overall effect was stunning, but I thought the real beauty lay in the details.

And I am always amused by stained glass windows of stained glass windows.  Here are two beautiful examples.
