Last week I gave a talk in, probably, the second fanciest room I have presented in during my career. (I still think the fanciest was L'Ecole des Mines, where I presented in the fall.) Last week I attended a conference at the Einaudi Institute, a research center funded by the Bank of Italy housed in a repurposed mansion in the northeastern part of Rome. The seminar room had been a grand parlor in an earlier life, complete with hand-blown Venetian glass chandeliers.
The building itself was quite beautiful, and the institute grounds also included a lovely wisteria-draped courtyard where the coffee and pastries were served during every break.
I had been to this part of Rome a couple of years ago and recalled some outstanding gelato at a small place tucked away on a side street nearby. I inquired at my hotel. I did not remember the name of the gelato place, but I remembered what it looked like: black and white decor with a vintage/industrial vibe. The concierge knew immediately what gelato place I meant, Come il Latte. It was every bit as good as my memory, so good, in fact, that I managed to fit in three cones in two days during the conference. Same order each time: liquid dark chocolate drizzled in the cone with two flavors of gelato: salted caramel and hazelnut.
